Black and White Tips

I have been asked several individuals how I take my Black and White photos. Well here is a tip on how I use the live view in the camera to give me a pre-visualization of the Black and White. This is for a Canon but other manufactures do the same thing but it may be called by a different name.

Set the Quality to Raw and Small JPG

Set Color Space to Adobe RGB

Set Picture Style to Monochrome

When you take a photo you will see a B/W representation on the LCD screen in Live View

February 1, 2016 Meeting to feature Rad Drew

Our next meeting is, Monday, February 1st, 2016 at 7pm. in Byrnes Auditorium of the Hatley Building, which is part of the Health Technology Campus, on 750 Laffoon Street in Madisonville, Ky.

We won’t have a business meeting this month or judge the monthly contest as we want to give our guest speaker plenty of time for his program and Q&A. Dues for 2016 are being collected and we will have a table setup if you want to do so before the program or during a break! You may also mail them to West Kentucky Photography Club, PO Box 13, Madisonville, Ky, 42431. $20 Individual and $30 Family. Military receive a $10 discount on either membership. This applies to folks that attend our meetings here in Madisonville, not members of our Facebook Group (it costs nothing to be a part of).

This month’s program will be by photographer, explorer and teacher Rad Drew from Indianapolis, Indiana.

In his presentation, Rad will demonstrate the powerful capabilities of the iPhone for creating extraordinary images and fine art. He will share his workflow, note his favorite apps, show “before and after” examples, and demonstrate how he uses his iPhone to create award winning images.

He’ll also remind us how what we already know about photography transfers to shooting with your iPhone. Just because it’s a phone, doesn’t mean you don’t treat it like a camera. In addition, he’ll discuss how he shoots with traditional DSLRs and Mirror-less cameras, and transfers those images to the iPhone for processing.

This is going to be a program that you’ll want to be sure and attend. It is open to the community free of charge, sponsored by our club, so help get the word out by sharing our event to other photography groups in the area and your friends! Let’s have a great turnout!

You can see some of Rad’s work, workshops and other information at his website:

Here’s his Bio from his website: Although I shot all through high school and college, and worked intermittently as a photojournalist after earning a BA in Journalism from Indiana University, Bloomington, my approach to photography changed dramatically with the acquisition of my first iPhone in 2010. To say that the iPhone has transformed how I see and how I think about photography would be an understatement! Today, as a result of carrying an iPhone with me all the time, I find that I am constantly evaluating light, shapes, colors and lines in everything around me, and because the phone is always with me, I take more opportunities to shoot what I see, sometimes with wonderful results. Bottom line? It’s so blasted FUN!

The February 2016 Contest Theme is: “Love” This will be judged during our March meeting. The March 2016 Contest Theme is: “Water”

Each dues paying member is allowed to submit no more than two JPG’s for the contest and photos MUST be shot the month prior to the judging for each contest! Bring your entries to our March 7th meeting and maybe you’ll win our first place $25 cash prize!

Our 2015 Worldwide Photo Walk location is Henderson, Ky

300x296_leaderDate: Saturday, October 3, 2015

Time: 08:30am – 11:00pm

Location Details: We will meet next to the old court house at the gazebo

After the walk, meet at: Commonwealth Kitchen and Bar on 2nd Street

Photo Walk Description

Our walk leader is our president, Jim Pearson, who is a freelance and fine art photographer with 40+ years of experience and a love of photographing railroads. He served 24 years in the Air Force as a photojournalist working for Combat Camera. Retired from there in 1995 and began working as a Photojournalist for The Messenger Newspaper in Madisonville, Ky till retiring in 2013.

We plan to have several co-leaders for the walk so we can break up into smaller groups for those that would like to walk with a group.

The map shows the basic course for our walk this year. Please be aware that you don’t have to follow the course exactly and everyone is encouraged to explore side streets and alleyways.

The walk should take you through a lot of the downtown area and along the riverfront for plenty of great photos!

We will also have several co-leaders for the walk so we can break-up in smaller groups for those that would like to walk with someone with more photo experience and that has participated in past walks. Of course you’re also welcome to head off on your own as well.

We do ask that you keep your walk to the general downtown area of Henderson though.

Please help get the word out on the walk by passing the walk info and location along to your friends!

After the walk those that want to, we’ll be gathering for lunch at the Commonwealth Kitchen and bar. I’ve talked with the manager and they feel they can accommodate our group, even if 50 people show up! In the past that hasn’t happened though. Please help us get some sort of a head count for them by emailing me at and letting us know how many in your party plan to join us for lunch.

If you want you can upload your favorite photos to the Worldwide Flickr Group for this year at:

You can also upload them to the West Kentucky Photography Club’s Flickr Group at:

Be aware that you will need to upload your entry for the 2015 Photowalk here on the photowalk site. There will be an option for that here once the walk date has past.

Milky Way photography event at Pennyrile Park

MilkywayOn July 17th everyone in the area is invited to join us for a night sky photography event at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park in Dawson Springs, Ky. Our backup date in case of bad weather is July 18th.

For those that would like to join us for dinner we’ll gather at the lodge dining room at 6pm and plan to leave for the shooting field at 7:30pm. Note: This is a dark field area!

Be sure to like this event page so you can keep up with any changes to the event.

We will have several photographers on hand that have experience in photographing the night sky and are willing to help those that never have done this before.

The location of the area where we’ll setup is on Pennyrile Forest State Park Road, which is just off Bainbridge Road (Hwy 398) which is the main road through the park.

There is a map included in the timeline below.

We’ll also post a lot of information and videos about photographing the night sky here on the timeline so again, be sure to like this event to keep updated on everything.

If you pull into the event area after dark we ask that you please turn your headlights off when you turn off of 398.

It’s just a short drive from there and you’ll be able to see fine with your parking lights. This will insure that your headlights won’t mess up everyone’s night vision or photos. You should see cars parked on your left just after you get past the fence row on your left.

Be sure to bring a good sturdy tripod, or whatever you have. Also we’d recommend a small flashlight with a red gel over the front of it. This will come in handy after it gets dark and you want to preserve your night vision. We’d also suggest bringing a bag or similar type chair as you’ll be waiting for awhile as your cameras are making exposures.
There is only a sliver of a moon on this night so it should be nice and dark.

The Milky Way should be in a nice area of the sky to photograph by 9:30 pm or so. Getting there early makes things much easier for setting up your shot and getting things in focus while there’s still some daylight!

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Click here for a map to the location where we’ll be setup.

Below is one of many videos you’ll find on the subject on YouTube.
